Lack of Physical Cues
Even when goals are clear, an unsupportive environment can make it harder to start. There must have been instances where you might have forgotten about your submission and remembered only when your friend had asked you about your progress. Without reminders, tasks can slip from your short term memory and distractions can take over.
Strategy: In this case, a powerful strategy is, self-cueing, that is, leaving reminders or physical cues in your environment to prompt action.
For example: keeping your laptop on your desk with the essay open, or writing a visible note like “just start with the introduction.” This is based on the idea that linking goals to visible reminders can improve task completion. (Einstein & McDaniel, 2005).
Low Reward Perception and Effort Evaluation
As discussed in the aMCC section, high academic load can feel emotionally draining and the brain might not perceive enough reward value to justify the effort to be put in the task.
When the perceived reward is too low compared to the anticipated effort, aMCC and other brain regions may reduce motivation and increase procrastination.
Strategy: Pairing tasks with small rewards, such as a snack, can help increase motivation through positive reinforcement. (Skinner, 1953) It can help activate the brain’s reward pathways and over time, the brain starts to associate productivity with reward, thus reducing avoidance.
By applying such strategies, students can better balance their academic load by reducing procrastination and improving consistency. Developing small, sustainable habits can transform effort into momentum and make studying less overwhelming and more manageable.
